Youtube is the most widely used video sharing website in the world with over 100 million video clips, most of which feature homemade video's to amuse and baffle the viewer. youtube.com has on average 70 million unique visitors a month in the US and is the sixth biggest audience on the web.
the type of users has changed dramatically in the few years, originally it was people posting silly videos for friends and family or it was someone trying to show the world what weird and wonderful things they could do. but now even the political world has jumped on the youtube band wagon, with post from political candidates or even the prime minister trying to get their political views or manifesto's across to the average Joe who wouldn't sit down and watch "politics today".
youtube allows anyone store short videos for private or public viewing, in an easy to use way. Founded in 2005 by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, it was bought over by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion. and has grown bigger and better ever since.
it has recently struck a deal with the music business after long discussions youtube agreed to pay a fee to the music companies to allow them to show music videos on youtube again after they where banned.
one of the main bonuses that youtube offers it's users is the easy, fast way to upload youtube videos to their website be it a blog, bebo or a fan site.
like youtube "todaysbigfail.com" is a video sharing site but of a much more selective audience and function there is only one new video added a day by the creater of the site and that video is of someone failing at something for example a skater trying a trick and failing but in a hilarious way that is both entertaining and cringe worthy. and every day the viewers rate the fail out of 5.
this website is designed for entertainment not for posting your own videos or sending a message, except don't film yourself failing at something cause people will laugh at it. it's for the times you spend at your computer bored wanting to look at people doing stupid things or hurting themselves in a "why would you do that" kind of way, and in that sense it does the job brilliantly.
